CROSSOVER MONTREAL
Date: 11 October 2009 to 15 October 2009
Venue: Institut National de l'Image et du Son (INIS)
The Interactive Screenwriting Workshop was a unique opportunity for producers from Quebec to explore the creative potential of new media. Over 5 days, they were guided through the Crossover Lab process, encouraged to develop their creativity, sharing of experience and expertise across disciplines.
The 15 participants included people from a background in documentary television and film, digital agencies, and radio. Despite not being residential, it was the usual, immersive and compelling Crossvoer experience: it was a particular challenge for the mentors since the working language was Franglais.
The workshop culminated with the participants pitching 5 innovative project ideas to a jury consisting of representatives from the Bell Fund, Bravo Fact and Telefilm. Four of the five presentations were presented in French.
The $5,000 award for the best pitch was won by a project called Urban Ge(r)ms, an irreverent comedy series that uses TV and social media to tell the sometimes parallel, sometimes convergent story of Mary - a socially inept would-be director - and Drew and "G", two obnoxious yet sympathetic hobos who use the electronic equipment they've stolen from her to create "Jackass"-type stunts.
Frank Boyd was interviewed at the Montreal Lab's closing party.
One of the mentors, Jill Gollick, has blogged about the lab here:
