CROSSOVER SCIENCE

Date: 22 November 2009 to 27 November 2009
Venue: North of England, Residential

According to a recent House of Lords report: "Society's relationship with science is in a critical phase... There is a widespread belief that the UK's post-war love affair with science has been replaced by an emerging anti-science mood which both fears the rapid development of science and is losing faith in the ability of science to solve society's problems."

Crossover Science will explore the potential of digital media to make compelling experiences focused on the stories, discoveries, challenges and moral dilemmas emerging from science and scientific research in the 21st Century.

Crossover's creative lab process will explore the use of interactive and participatory media to engage audiences with contemporary science. Participants will have a unique opportunity to experiment  with new applications of digital media and to develop formats combining elements drawn from documentary, drama and games; they will ask how to harness the power of social networks to devise formats rich in user contributions, what opportunities do mobile or location based platforms offer, how can games and participatory media by used to attract new audiences?

The Lab will comprise a blend of masterclass, presentations, workshop, screenings and, naturally, play. It will bring creative professionals from diverse disciplines - film and TV production, animation, games, theatre, web design and new media -together with scientists to share understanding of a rapidly changing mediascape, to form new interdisciplinary collaborations, to brainstorm, develop and prototype ideas for innovative projects.

Crossover Science is sponsored by the Wellcome Trust.
